BRITTA EASTBURG FRIESEN

Writer & Editor

ABOUT BRITTA EASTBURG FRIESEN

I am a freelance editor specializing in young adult and adult fiction, although my portfolio also includes academic work, religious nonfiction, and marketing copy. Past editing projects have ranged in scope from picture books to YA fantasy to Biblical commentary. I hold a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University and a B.A. in English from Wheaton College. Previously, I worked in the children's department of a major Christian publishing house but left to pursue my MFA and continue writing and editing independently.

In addition to helping writers produce their best possible work, I spend much of my time developing my own writing, including short stories and, most recently, a novel. I am constantly working to improve both my writing and my editing skills. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, I currently reside in South Bend, Indiana, where I teach college composition and creative writing in addition to my editing work.

SERVICES

Past projects include YA novels, academic essays, marketing materials, and even a health and fitness book, but most of my clients write fiction and memoir. Please contact me for price estimates. My fees are competitive and affordable, and I can generally tailor projects to fit your budget.

MACRO EDIT

Includes plot construction, character development, point of view, style, format, and other big-picture items. Services include a comprehensive letter with observations and suggestions as well as specific comments within the manuscript and light in-text editing.

LINE EDIT

Sentence- and paragraph-level editing, for the finer points. Includes substantive in-text editing as needed. Typically six to ten pages per hour, depending on the project.

PROOFREAD

Flip-flopped vowels, missing commas, hononym confusion. I'm here to help with all those picky little eye-tricks. I typically manage eight to ten pages per hour.

I decided to work with [Britta] after a phone conversation, in which she impressed me with her intelligence, professionalism, and maturity.  My decision was rewarded with nothing less than the best writing class that I have ever taken.  First off, her edits and comments made it clear to me that she understood the goals of my novel and respected my writing style, and she found numerous ways and opportunities to enhance the story and my strengths as a writer.  Most critically, she gently but clearly pointed out my weaknesses in ways that made me a better story teller and not just a better writer of grammatically correct sentences.

Matt Press

author of the Desperate Days series

Britta is an outstanding editor. More than that though, she is a great person---a kind, caring, and supportive partner in the writing process. She has earned my complete trust. Britta is accessible, and is an extremely hard and diligent worker. Most importantly, she is honest in her evaluation of my work. She provides appropriate praise but also points out my deficiencies. All of this, together, makes me a better writer. I couldn't be happier working with Britta Eastburg Friesen. In short, she is the best and earns my highest recommendation.

Dr. Paul Semendinger

author of novel Scattering the Ashes (Ravenswood Publishing)

Working with Britta through content and line edits for my final book in the Ascension Series was bar-none my best editorial experience to date.

-Professional? Check!

-Thorough? Check!

-Timely? Check!

-Gifted in her craft? Double check!

(All that...and a bag of chips!)

I worked with Britta when she was my editor at Harper Collins on my Patriots, Redcoats & Spies book. She is amazing. Every one of her edits, comments and ideas made perfect sense and made me smile because they improved the story so much. Her work was so fantastic I had to hire her as a freelance fiction editor to help tighten another manuscript I wrote before I sent it to publishers and agents for review. Britta will make your story and words sing.
